Welcome to the website of the new ESRC-funded Discourses of Voluntary Action project. We’re really excited to have this website up and running and to be able to share the progress of the research as it develops.
It’s been a busy few months, starting with an early presentation in July at Mass Observation’s 80th Anniversary Conference at the University of Sussex by Irene Hardill, Rose Lindsey and Georgina Brewis. This was a fantastic interdisciplinary event and a great opportunity to introduce our new project and discuss some of the work we will be doing with Mass Observation material. You can listen to some of the keynotes here.
In July we also had the first meeting of our project steering group at Age UK.
This project is about working very closely with voluntary sector partners as co-producers of research, so we’ve also been having a lot of meetings with the various voluntary sector partners on the project to sign formal agreements about how the research team will access and analyse both the archival and contemporary material. We’ve been into damp basements and dusty lofts to acquire some 1940s material already, and we’re starting to select some documents with which to pilot an analytic framework.
